Consistent beats flashy

This one’s a special look at a family business featured in our latest docuseries episode. Accurate Staging has been building the structural pieces of live entertainment since 2001, out of a warehouse in LA that’s since grown into additional locations in Nashville and Atlanta.
Three generations of the same family work there, and even the ones who aren’t “family” have usually been there for 10+ years. It’s a culture that keeps their people engaged and delivers quality every time.
They’ve built the structures behind Travis Scott’s toaster (yes, I got toasted… no, I’m not over it), the inflatable globe for Kanye West, stages for the World Cup, NFL, ESPN, and Hollywood, and even scuba-certified some of their crew to build underwater.
Why this one matters:
Co-founders Jose and Freddy started this company with almost no gear. Word got out they’d left their old jobs, and people started calling, but nobody would rent them equipment. They spent two to three months building inventory in the shadows before they landed their first job.
Twenty-five years later, they’re building for the biggest tours and events in the world. Spending a couple days with their team revealed so much about the work ethic that leads to success in this industry.
#1 If you can’t rent it, build it
Accurate manufactures close to 80% of what they rent out: the decking, the trusses, the house-built smart blocks with leveling jacks that used to require someone crawling underneath with a jack by hand.
Jose’s reasoning hasn’t changed since he started welding stages in 1986. “If you’re at somebody else’s mercy for gear, you’re also at their mercy for the timeline.”
Takeaway: Owning your own capability means you’re never waiting on someone else’s schedule.
Try this: Name one thing your work depends on that you currently have to borrow, book, or beg for. Ask what it would take to own that piece instead.
#2 Reliable beats impressive
Herman, the crew chief, put it plainly: Consistent and reliable beats flashy, every time. He’s watched people get hired for talent but not get called back because they weren’t dependable.
Joe, sixteen years in, lives that same standard from the other direction. He’d rather be a leader than a boss, so he still hops on the forklift himself when a job needs it.
Nobody at Accurate has just one job title. Jose encourages everyone to double up on skills, because a welder who can also patch scenery is worth more on any given show.
Takeaway: The people who last aren’t the most talented in the room. They’re the ones you can count on without having to check.
Try this: Pick one task this week that’s below your title and do it without being asked. Don’t mention it afterward either.
#3 Land it, then figure it out
When Chevy needed five cars flying above a stage, Accurate didn’t have a system for that yet. They built a custom track that let four guys roll a car into position and rig it in under two minutes.
When the NBA needed a full-size court built overnight, crews mobilized before sunrise and had it done in a single workday.
When events shut down during COVID, Accurate built safety barriers for local businesses at close to no cost, just to keep their own people paid and working.

Takeaway: Confidence is trusting you’ll figure it out once you’re in it.
Try this: Say yes to the next thing that scares you a little before you’ve solved how.

One line I loved: “The client is going to remember that piece of wood that wasn’t painted or that dirty stair handle that left a mark on their clothes.” Jose said he coaches his crews on taking care of the small stuff nobody notices until it’s missing.
