Crew Rates Are Rising - But Is It Sustainable?

Jul 16, 2025

Right now, we’re in a pivotal moment for live events.

Across the industry, pay expectations for crew are climbing. Audio engineers asking $600+ per day. Lighting directors booked out months in advance. Labor shortages have created real demand—and for the first time in a long time, crew professionals have leverage.

And honestly? It’s overdue.

Live event professionals are some of the most skilled, adaptable, and hard-working people out there. They deserve to be paid accordingly.

But as rates rise, a question is surfacing more frequently—especially from employers working with tight margins and unpredictable budgets:

Can we keep up?

It’s a fair question, and one without a one-size-fits-all answer. But here’s my take:

The future of crew pay isn’t just about higher day rates. It’s about structure.

We need clarity, transparency, and better systems on both sides of the hiring equation. That means:

  • Employers posting clear rate ranges, timelines, and expectations upfront

  • Crew professionals confidently sharing their experience, availability, and non-negotiables

  • A platform (like Giggs) where both can connect efficiently and fairly, without the guesswork

When we treat professionals like professionals—and move away from last-minute DMs and informal handshake deals—we create space for both sides to thrive.

Yes, rates are going up. But the real opportunity lies in building a system where talent and budgets don’t have to be at odds—because everyone knows what to expect.

What about you?

What rates are you seeing out there? How are you balancing the need for top-tier talent with the realities of your budget?

Let’s talk about it. The only way forward is together.
