From Civil Engineer to Guitar Tech: A Lucky Break

Chris didn’t plan on a music career. After getting laid off as a civil engineer, he found himself on tour with Butch Walker, thanks to a push from his brother. What started with string changes and problem-solving backstage quickly evolved into bigger gigs, including tours with Train, Pink, and eventually Dierks Bentley. His career took off after small but smart moves—like buying Sharpies for a tour manager in need.

“All I ever wanted was to see the world through music,” Chris says. And he did just that—touring across Europe, working with major artists, and picking up critical backstage skills along the way.

Life on Tour: Staying Calm Under Pressure

In Chris’s world, things can—and do—go wrong. Whether it’s a faulty amp mid-show or a beer-chugging fan onstage, staying calm and communicative is essential. “In moments of chaos, people look for peace and confidence,” he explains.

Chris shares how working as Dierks Bentley’s tour manager has kept him connected to the heart of live events. Rather than hiding in the office, Chris helps out on stage—whether it’s guiding fans from the pit or troubleshooting sound issues.

Founding Stage Water: Giving Back to the Music Industry

The pandemic was a wake-up call for Chris. When gigs disappeared, many entertainment workers—most independent contractors—were left without support. To help address this, Chris co-founded Stage Water, a black-canned beverage that donates 15% of profits to organizations supporting entertainment workers.

“This industry steps up during crises, but there was no safety net for us during COVID,” Chris says. Stage Water aims to provide ongoing support, with a full product launch scheduled for 2025.

Lessons Learned: Communication is Key

Through years on the road, Chris learned that the key to success is clear communication—whether with a tour crew or family. “Overcommunicating might feel excessive, but it prevents misunderstandings,” he says. He credits Dierks Bentley’s crew for fostering a strong culture of trust, built on open dialogue and mutual respect.
