Starting from the Ground Up
Joanne’s journey began in the bustling offices of a music management company in London, where she worked as a receptionist. This role offered her a front-row seat to the complexities of the music world. “I knew how people liked their tea and coffee,” she recalls with humor. From these humble beginnings, Joanne’s curiosity and dedication propelled her into assisting major artists like Robbie Williams and Sia, where she managed everything from MySpace pages to merchandise creation.
A Turning Point in Berlin
Despite her early success, Joanne’s move to Berlin marked a dark chapter. Immersed in the city’s nightlife, she sought connection in the wrong places. The spiral led her to a breaking point, but with the support of a mentor, she found her way into recovery. Joanne left the industry temporarily, working in a bakery in Germany and learning German as she built her foundation for a sober life. By February 27, 2010, she committed to her sobriety—a milestone she continues to celebrate.
Championing Mental Health and Sobriety
Joanne returned to the UK with a mission: to bring her lived experiences to the forefront. She worked in mental health services and eventually joined Music Support, a charity dedicated to helping music industry professionals. Today, Joanne co-leads Roadies in Recovery, a peer support group providing accountability and connection for professionals navigating sobriety. From virtual meetings to sober tables at industry events, her work proves that the music industry and sobriety can coexist beautifully.
Looking Forward
Joanne’s vision includes fostering a culture where recovery is normalized and celebrated. Her journey is a testament to resilience, proving that even in an industry often associated with chaos, clarity and connection are possible.
